Small talk with Hajo

Post by Hajo06 »

May I introduce me to you.
My nickname is Hajo. I live in German in a little village near Görlitz. My hobby's are books, cars and computer. The best is, when I use this hobby's all together.
Sorry my English is not good. The time I have learned the English language in school is long time ago. :-(
Since 8 years I drive a “Golf 3” Ecomatic. The “Model-Jahr” (model year ???) is 1994. At this old car is sometime a repair necessary. But when I drive to a free garage or to a authorised workshop, they don' know this car. Nobody have experience! So I must do it by my self. I'm a little mastermind and I have not 10 thumbs on my hands. :-D
At the beginning I study my documents. With my notebook I found out all mistakes of the DIGISWING and the components. This is every time a feeling of success and I'm not going to squander my money any more on the “workshop-mafia”. :-D

Hi Hajo,

Good to hear from you again, your English is good :)

I have only owned my Ecomatic for only 3 months, I have two Mk3s :)

The previous owners of my car, the owner had driven it for 14 years since new! I bet they were really used to how the car behaved after all that time. I am still getting used to it a bit.

Mine currently has some quirks: The biggest quirk is that every so often when restarting, the starter motor stops turning, the car then does nothing for a few seconds, and then the car reattempts to start and it is fine. I am not sure what is causing this to happen.

The second problem, which I only noticed the other day, is if the car has been standing for a long time with the engine off, and I start it up when a gear is engaged, the clutch is closed very abruptly and the car can jolt forward (or backwards), I can't figure out why this is, do you have any ideas?

The third problem, is that the radio looses power when the engine is being restarted, I think my "control module for auxillary battery and driving lights" has failed. When I spoke to the original owners, they said the car had done this from new, does yours loose power to the radio?

Please tell me more about your car :D

It is very difficult for me to translate technical concepts in such a way that we talk everybody of the same problem.

MK3s ????? TRIUMPH SPITFIRE MK3 or Ford Escort MK3 Cabrio???? Pictures, pictures, pictures....!!!! :-)
Here's my car. It is not lowered and fast, but broadly based! :-D
http://www.golf3forum.de/userpicsup/21148-2466.jpg

Before we continue talk, must I only know what you have for documentations? If you need something, ICQ, scipe or email about PN or email.

I do not understand the 1st and 2nd problem properly. Pleace explain to me once more, so that I understand it exact. :-(
3. is clear. But I save the explanation for later (documentation!!!) :-)

Hallo Hajo,

Lassen Sie uns versuchen, in Deutsch :-)

In Ecomatic-Modus.

1-2 Sekunden warten
Der Anlasser startet dann dreht sich wieder
Der Motor Feuer

The concept "MK3" was unknown to me in VW. Is it an English name?

Now I have understood your problems.
I look at it as necessary, you must select the control (DIGISWING).
Hardware: PC/notebook computer and cable, e.g., http://cgi.ebay.de / KKL-409-1-USB-Kabel-OBD-II-OBD2-VW-Audi-Seat-Skoda_W0QQitemZ310161977292QQcmdZViewItemQQptZElektroger%C3%A4te? hash=item4837182fcc & _ trksid=p3286.c0.m14 and software http://www.ross-tech.com/vag com/download

1. problem: While starting clutch may not close. G157 load signal potentiometer gives wrong signal? Or subpressure? What is if you F191 gear operating switch stick? Does the clutch also close there?

2. problem: starter motor wore out? When does signal come in the clip 50? (Start requirement) announcement team 04/1 Nr.8. When does signal come in relay J53? Announcement team 04/3 No. 7

3. problem: I must only translate problem radio. Please, in time.

Hi Hajo,

We call them "Golf Mk3" here :) - It stands for "Mark", as in "version".

I already have VAGCOM and checked all the measuring blocks and fault codes Everything is OK. :) (but that does not help me find the problem :() F191 works correctly as expected. Load signal potentiometer all appears to be fine, however I guess it could be so sporadic that the information is not reported in VAGCOM. i.e., if it occurs for a 0.1second, VAGCOM is not fast enough to show the change.

If the vaccum pressure was lost, I would expect the clutch to be closed anyway and the starter motor wouldn't be able to to turn the engine (as the engine would be connected to the gearbox). The clutch seems to close after the engine has started. I will record some more information via VAGCOM :)

I wonder if the priority switching valve N185 is opening too soon after the engine has started (because of a defective F190 or F210) and stealing vacuum from the clutch circuit?

Re 2: I thought too about the starter motor, however, when starting via the key, the starter motor is fine, even if cranking for very long periods, which leads me to believe it is digiswing which is commanding the starter to stop turning. Have you ever had to replace your starter motor?

Thanks for your help :)

Cool, Cool. :-D This is the right car for my wife. If she sits on the front passenger seat, she brakes and steers always with. And I would have my needed rest on the driver's side. :-D

Here once pictures of another MK3. A BMW Z3 has brought up his MK3 on my son. From the outside one sees only some scratch. But the whole ground is bent. Even the emergency traversing wheel has a bump. It is a pity, more financially total loss.

Nice cars Hajo :)

Can I ask - how do you find the ecomatic copes with traffic nowadays? I guess it wasn't built for todays traffic and impatience in mind.

In the UK, the ecomatic is a bit restricted because if you do any coasting, you get people driving really close up behind you, because of their impatience, etc.

Also, the engine switching off can be a bit awkward at busy junctions.

If there was little traffic on the roads... I could coast for MUCH longer. :)

Yes, you are right. The Ecomatic needs getting used to.
The driving gives after a learning phase properly pleasure. My woman is a physically handicapped person and also drives with pleasure with the car.
I have good experiences on country roads and also in the town traffic. On the highway one can also switch off Ecomatic.
The Ecomatic is out nothing for drivers with “peeling out”or “burning rubbers”. But something for “older versed men” :-).
I always think in the Ecomatic modus: „Why other cars have a running engine, if the engine isn't used?“.
Drivers with “emergency brake application” in every red traffic light get a nervous breakdown, if I roll with 7,245 km/h to the red traffic light. Often I see headlight flasher, but they are also not quicker.
I know this, however, also from my two-stroke engines “Trabant”. Because of the "smell" nobody wants to drive behind me.
Other makers of cars have lately anew invented the Ecomatic principle!!!

I am so sorry, I was a long time offline. :?
I had a big problem with my computer. I hope the trouble is a thing of the past now.
And I promise I'll spend more time in the forum in the future.

I welcome all new members and guests. :)

I want to tell you about a climax.
I had invited to a Ecomatic-meeting. My stupid computer did not want to send the invitation to England.
As you can see in the picture, 4 cars made in Zwickau were present on this party.

Image

Do you don't know Zwickau?
Zwickau is a industrial town in west of the Free State of Saxony.
From 1958 to 1991 the car "Trabant" were build there.
And the “Ecomatic” fabricated in Mosel.

Image

Mosel is a quarter of the town Zwickau now.
The 3 owners of the Ecomatic chatted far into the night.
Many experiences, adventures, compares and opinions were exchanged and transmitted.
I hope, this meeting was not the last. ;) ;)

Welcome back Hajo :)

I was worried you may be gone forever

Perhaps that was the first ever Ecomatic meet in the world? :) I hope you all learnt from eachother and had a good time talking about the cars. I would have loved to have been there, but one problem would be that I can't speak German ;)

Did you find out any gems of information with your discussions?

I never asked you before, how many ecomatics were produced? I tend to hear "5000"

We have talked all together very well in English and with the hands. :D ;)

My special winter equipment

Post by Hajo06 »

Beside the normal winter equipment (broom, ice scratch, blanket, non-skid chains...) I still have some additional parts.

Image

On the left you see the small battery charger.
I need this because my battery is quite old.

On the right is a power inlet. The cable goes to an engine heating.
This is a small immersion boiling device. Behind the engine in a core plug it was grown.
This heating should heat in 4 hours the coolant of-20 ° C to +40 ° C.
I plug the cable always one or 2 hours before journey beginning and the engine starts well with warm coolant. ;)

In the interior I plug a heating fan from a DIY store (approx. 10€).
After half an hour all windows are defrosted and in the interior it is quite nicely warm. ;)

Who is parking under a lamplight can't use it.
But at my carport is a power outlet. ;)

Hello to everybody, also to the new members!
I am still here. I still live. Only I lack the time to write. ;) ;)
I must say honestly, I have problems to understand the many new technical expressions around everything.
It costs to me a lot of trouble to translate everything exactly.
I will write soon once more something if I have the time.

Here some new informations from Germany of the World of Ecomatic.
http://www.golf3forum.de/thread,threadi ... age-4.html

I had even a call for help at the "Ecomatic - Emergency telephone".
And my help was successful.
I repaired the Ecomatic with the laptop. ;) ;) ;)

Hi Hajo,

I understand it must take considerable time to translate. I use google translate when browsing the Golf3Forum, it does a reasonable job.

Congrats on fixing the Ecomatic, you must have saved them a lot of frustration and money.

I cannot access that forum at the moment, it seems to have gone buggy from my IP address, you may like to pass on the following information:

Later Ecomatics had a revised instruction manual which says it is possible to tow trailers, so, it is indeed possible to tow trailers with at least some Ecomatics :)

My son found a great video.
Link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JULm18Mz1OQ
It is an advertisement of VW Germany and as old as our cars.
And here my translation:

"You are separating your waste.
You are composting your rubbish.
You are using environmentally friendly paper
When do you change?
To the Golf with impetus utilization automatic.
Golf Ecomatic !!!!
The first eco-, you can buy."

I hope I find the right words.
