New clutch

Well I took the plunge and Ecomatic #1 is going for a new clutch on 1st December - I am hoping this will solve my clutch issues at last, if not, it will rule it out :)

With 230,000 kilometres my clutch slided in high revs.
In a garage a clutch repairing set (Clutch Kit LUK 621133209) was inserted.
As a precaution the wave sealing rings in the engine and gearbox were also changed.
They would not have held out any more long time .

After the change of the clutch behaviour was worse than before the reparation.
After when I was at a computer V.A.G. 1551 in a VW garage, the car drives like a new Ecomatic.

- V.A.G 1551 connect
- Ignition switch on
- Select Direct Enty Adresss Word 12 - Digiswing
- Selekt Basic Settings 04
- Selekt Display Group D0
Basic setting initiate.
All clutch values in the Digiswing were extinguished.
- Then for 2 seconds put the foot hard down. Load signal potentiometer G157 to 100 %
- Start The Engine and for 20 seconds while indling without using the accelerator
The Digiswing is looking for the Biting Point.
The clutch is closing slowly until the signal from the Gearbox speed sender G38 is a nonzero value.
The Biting Point is when the transmission input shaft starts to turning.
- Then the Digiswing learns the right settings to clutch after about 20 times in the driving operation mode. While this time the driving is uncomfortable.

You con controll the settings in the Measuring Block Group 03. The clutch settings number 3 must near 0% and near 100%!!!!

Hi Hajo,

Thank you for the information about the sealing rings in the engine and gearbox - I will pass this on to the mechanic for them to check. :)

I think, the clutch my mechanic will use, is Sachs.

I will let them know about putting the car in basic setting, however, depending how the car drives I may just do this at home once it returns from the workshop :)

I wonder, do you think after digiswing is reset to basic setting, it is better to drive normally and let it adapt after 20 clutch operations, or, follow the procedure described as follows:
-Pull away
-Select 2nd gear
-Perform 10 clutch operations by releasing accelerator and depressing to at least 50% throttle.

Have you read of that procedure in the workshop manual?

This is my trying of translation of a private study manual (SSP). ;) ;) ;)
The VW garage used this procedure.
I don`t know your procedure.

New clutch has been fitted, and a lot of my problems have been solved!

The car now no longer "jolts" with the clutch like it did before. As soon as the engine has restarted, I still feel the clutch final control element slightly close the clutch (I presume this is in anticipation of the driver pulling away), but this is very minor.

The basic setting procedure was not carried out correctly, so I think there is still room for improvement.

My ecomatic is now very smooth. :)
