Hi,
I am the proud owner of a 1995 Volkswagen Mk3 Golf Ecomatic which I have driven happily for 10 years. Unfortunately the electric power steering pump is on the blink, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. There is no pattern to when it does and doesn't work I am still driving it even though the power steering doesn't work propperly and it is very difficult to steer. I am not even sure if I should be driving it?
I wonder if any kind person could tell me where I can get hold of a replacement electric power steering pump.
Thanks.

Hi Floyd,
Driven for 10 years! The forum applauds you
Whereabouts in the UK are you? I am also with Zen internet
Another owner also sent me an email asking the same question a few months back, unfortunately as far as we both know, the only place to get a replacement one is from the Volkswagen Dealers.
Part number: 1H0 423 155
Price: Approx £525.00
(disclaimer: please check before ordering!)
I imagine there are companies out there which can service this motor, for considerably cheaper than this, just finding one is the problem. Any company which specialises in servicing/repair of compact hydraulic motors, I would have thought, may be able to repair this.
If it is working on and off, it may just be a loose connection or wiring fault somewhere, perhaps inside the pump internals, or elsewhere. I think I have seen this problem on a polish forum before with it and it was faulty wiring inside the pump. If it is a simple wiring fault, anyone competant to dismantle the pump (without breaking it) ought to be able to fix it.
It could also be the power steering pump relay at fault, or the ECU is playing up and commanding it to switch off randomly (this would be rare)
I guess the first diagnostic would perhaps be to bypass the control unit/relay and power the pump directly so it runs continuously, and then test and see whether it still turns off, so you can determine whether it is the pump unit itsself.
Look forward to hearing from you

Re: Electric Power Steering Pump
Hi
Thanks a lot for that great information. The garage here in Cornwall did take the pump out and "test it on the bench". He said that we needed a new pump so I'm guessing unfortunately it's not just a loose connection. The garage did quote us £500+ for a new pump but we were hoping to find a reconditioned one. £500+ is probably more than the car is worth now.
Well the MOT runs out on 16 July so if I haven't found one by then it looks like it'll be the end of the road for my little Ecomatic. It's a fantastic car, one of the most reliable I've ever owned and very economical of course.

Hi Floyd,
It is a shame that replacement parts cost so much, I am sure VW could do better on the prices if they tried. bet someone can service them, but finding who does it and the cost is another thing.
If you don't mind, could you tell us a bit more about your ecomatic and its repair history? It would be a great help to me and us all if I could find out what has gone wrong with other ecomatics so I can look out for this on mine

Re: Electric Power Steering Pump
Hi unfortunately my electric power steering pump stopped working ,riding without power stering is very annoying ,
new one costs about £630
complet regeneration of my original about £269
but there is hope that only the electric engine in the pump died, wiring fault ,in that case it will cost about £100 ,
i checked if there is power to the engine it is i pull out pomp and give it to workshop that repair electric engines got my finger crossed and hope it will work.
polish forum with that problem http://www.elektroda.pl/rtvforum/topic1003263.html
If this won`t help i`ll change my ecomatic to no power stering golf, it costs about £76, but hope it wont come to that

Re: Electric Power Steering Pump
Hi Jimmi,
I hope the repair was successful?
There is an electric PAS pump for sale on eBay UK - but they are asking quite a lot if you ask me. If you are interested, I could try and see if he will bring the price down for you.
Oh also, thanks for that link, I had never come across it before, it doesn't look like repairing the motor is an easy DIY job does it?

Hi Jimmi,
Personally I hope your repair was unsuccessful as I only support the repair of Korean made cars; not there is much need for repair on these finely manufactured vehicles, this is boasted in their 5 year warranty !
Much Love

I raise you a clutch positioner.
It leaves that left foot free to do more interesting things.

Hi
It's alive working better than before, total cost was £74, the repair was similar to fixing any electrical engine the guy who did it usually repairs engines in vacuum cleaners and kitchen equipment
i did about 40 000 km on my car and it was most annoying malfunction,
i don`t known anything about Korean made cars but i wish you that they will still work when they will have 18 years old
clutch positioner thanks to him my second car will have automatic transmission
