Sorry for not replying sooner. Yes when the 3 lights flash a fault code has been set in the ECU. [k111] should illuminate for the rest of the journey preventing engine switching off. This is only cleared when ignition turned off. If [k110] also stays on then an issue is likely present with the load ...

Sounds very strange... Do you have VAGCOM? Might be worth dusting out VAGCOM and checking all the measuring block values to make sure they are plausible. If you've managed to fix it by bypassing wires seems like it is luckily just a sensor fault and nothing mechanical.

Haha yes my friend noticed the one on eBay last month, it didn't actually have "ecomatic" in the item title so I didn't see it at first myself either. It had 1 owner since 1995. Would have bought it if I had more space.

Update: I got my mechanic to replace the glow plugs as I was struggling with the tools I had, it took him a little while too but he had a special glow plug tool, I'd have never got them off with my own tools due to injector pipes in the way, engine now starts effortlessly in extreme british winter :...

I bought a Genuine VW 000 915 105 AH battery during the summer (bought off eBay new, I'm not made of money!) and it hasn't let me down. Good job I bought it. Well I took the plunge and Ecomatic #1 is going for a new clutch on 1st December - I am hoping this will solve my clutch issues at last, if not, it will rule it out :)
